Erosion
These examples show the trajectories of solid particles with different sizes through an elbow and tee. The larger diameter particles deviate further from the mean flow of the carrier fluid and collide with the pipe walls causing material loss or erosion. The contours on the wall surfaces show the erosion rate from the particle impacts.
Applications
Tracking particles through a fluid has numerous industrial applications. In addition to predicting erosion rates in piping, particle tracking models can used to simulate the follwing processes:
aerosol dispersion
heating/cooling of particles
vapourisation and boiling of liquid droplets
liquid fuel and coal combustion
droplet breakup and coalescence
particle degradation and breakdown
particle separation and classification
bubble stirring of liquids
