Erosion

These two examples show a range of particle sizes flowing through an elbow and tee. The larger particles deviate further from the mean flow of the fluid and have greater impacts on the pipe walls. Contours on the wall surface show the erosion rate from these impacts.

 

 

Applications

Tracking particles through the fluid has a great many industrial applications. In addition to predicting erosion rates in piping here the same technique can be applied to other items of equipment such as valves, vessels and cyclones.

Particle impact velocities and angles can be used to calculate erosion as shown here and can also be used to determine particle break-up.
